When the body is filled with ego and selfishness, the cycle of birth and death does not end. (Guru Granth Sahib, 126)

Practicing egotism and selfishness, they try to impress others by showing off. They perform all sorts of rituals, but they gain no acceptance. Without You, Lord, nothing happens at all. You forgive those who are adorned with the Shabad. They are born, and they die, but they do not understand the Lord. Night and day they wander in love with duality. The lives of the self-willed manmukhs are useless; in the end, they die regretting and repenting. (Guru Granth Sahib, 127)

True is Your Command. Gurmukhs know it well. Through the Guru's Teachings, selfishness and conceit are eradicated, and the Truth is realized. (Guru Granth Sahib, 144)

Through the Guru's Teachings, eradicate selfishness and conceit. Nanak says, chant and meditate on the Naam. (Guru Granth Sahib, 177)

Those who act in egotism and selfishness die and what do they gain? Those who meet the Perfect Guru are rid of all conflicts. (Guru Granth Sahib, 226)

Acting in egotism, selfishness and conceit, the foolish, ignorant, faithless cynic wastes his life. Nanak says, He dies in agony, like one dying of thirst; this is because of the deeds he has done. (Guru Granth Sahib, 260)
