Around 3am in the morning of Sep 21, 2014, two Gurdwaras were attacked in two separate cities including Marathon in Greece. Gurdwara Shri Deshmesh and Gurdwara Ravidass were attacked as an organized attack on the Sikh Community. No suspects have been identified. Investigation reveals that the shots were fired from a rifle. The shots created holes in doors and windows. Luckily no one was injured from the attacks. This is the second attack on Gurdwara Sahib Shri Deshmesh within 2 years. Sikhs are visiting Gurdwara Sahib with caution in fear of another attack. Attack appears to be driven due to economic unrest in Greece, where extremist native Greeks attack minorities to drive Sikhs out of the country. Sikhs in Greece have stated that these are racially motivated crimes. Sikhs are being targeted in hate crimes nationwide as right-wing and neo-nazi parties grab a foothold around the country since the economic downturn in Greece.
The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC) has strongly condemned the attack on two Sikh Gurdwara Sahibs in Greece. In a statement, SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar said the Greece government must trace the miscreants involved in the attack and take strict action against them.
